Handle furniture and effects


Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to handle furniture and effects, and to apply basic principles and routine procedures in a range of furniture removal contexts in accordance with relevant industry codes of practice.

It includes preparing for removal, moving furniture items in accordance with the removal plan and loading/unloading furniture onto/from the removal vehicle.

Work is performed under limited or minimum supervision generally within a team environment.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Prepare for removal

1.1

Appropriate removal equipment and materials are selected and work areas are organised in consultation with client upon arrival at client’s premises

1.2

Hazardous items are identified through consultation with client in accordance with workplace procedures

1.3

Protective coverings and drop cloths are placed in packing and traffic areas in accordance with workplace procedures

1.4

Checks are made that client has prepared specific items for removal as required by workplace policy

1.5

Routes for lifting and moving furniture and effects to vehicle are identified, and floors, pathways and/or stairs are checked to ensure they are free of obstacles and hazards before goods are handled

Move furniture items

2.1

Furniture and effects are selected, lifted, moved and loaded onto vehicle in accordance with removal documentation, work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations and workplace procedures

Special lifting and moving equipment is selected and used in accordance with WHS/OHS regulations and workplace procedures

Load vehicle

3.1

Vehicle/container is prepared for loading process, and furniture and effects are stowed and secured in accordance with removal documentation, client requirements and workplace procedures

Furniture and effects are unloaded from vehicle/container and stored in accordance with removal documentation and workplace policy

3.3

Required removal documentation is completed in accordance with workplace requirements

Evidence of Performance

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards

applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures

communicating and working effectively with others

identifying and correctly using relevant equipment

identifying dangerous goods and other items that are prohibited carriage during a removal and taking appropriate action in accordance with regulatory requirements and operating procedures

implementing contingency plans and modifying activities

monitoring and prioritising work activities in terms of planned schedule

operating and adapting to differences in furniture, equipment and operating environment in accordance with operating procedures

reading, interpreting and following relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs

selecting and using required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards

servicing equipment in terms of maintenance schedule and operating procedures

working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to furniture or equipment.


Evidence of Knowledge

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

housekeeping standards and procedures

insurance rights and responsibilities

methods of securing a load on a removal vehicle

risks for handling furniture and effects during a removal and related precautions to control risks

specialised lifting equipment and procedures for its use

WHS/OHS procedures and guidelines for lifting and moving loads

workplace procedures and policies for handling furniture and effects.


Assessment Conditions

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment include:

a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations

applicable documentation including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals

relevant materials, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment currently used in industry.
